Dear Friends,
The 2020 Digital Essay Competition (DEC) online question is: How is technology helping you, your family, and your community during the coronavirus pandemic? Or Ni vipi teknolojia inakusaidia wewe, familia yako na jamii yako wakati huu wa janga la ugonjwa wa korona?
This year, when all schools are currently closed, we invite all Upper Primary and Secondary school students to submit their essays online for the following categories: Kiswahili, English, Art, Kenyan Sign Language, Braille, French, and German. DEC encourages students to develop their own original ideas and voices.
The 2020 DEC Official Launch will take place on 26th May at 3pm East Africa Time on Facebook Live at eKitabu’s Facebook page: http://facebook.com/ekitabu. You can find out how to submit your essay at essay.ekitabu.com. We strongly urge everyone to send in your entries online this year to help us maintain social distancing and reduce the risk of coronavirus exposure for everyone involved.
Launched in 2013, DEC has reached almost 44,000 students and their teachers across all 47 counties of Kenya. DEC encourages students to use ICT in learning, and it recognizes and rewards students and the teachers who support them. DEC prizes include scholarship money, computing devices, gift hampers, and national recognition with MOE. Collaborators in DEC include Kenya Ministry of Education, Education Development Trust (EDT), The Embassy of France in Kenya, Kenya Publishers Association (KPA), Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA), Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA), Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA), Longhorn Publishers, Moran Publishers, Oxford University Press East Africa, and Pearson Education Africa.
We are working to make DEC 2020 more inclusive every year, and we welcome collaboration with all teachers, parents, and education stakeholders. We welcome your ideas, creativity and resourcefulness now in particular to reach all children while schools are closed and for the transition back to school when schools reopen.
A final note: Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) is now broadcasting accessible storybooks in Kenyan Sign Language daily in Digital Story Time. We are happy to report that deaf children and hearing children together have been enjoying the pilot episodes, and we are now producing more. Karibu sana watu wote to tune in Tuesdays to Fridays on EDU TV Kenya from 6:05-6:35pm EAT. And thank you to all our friends in Kenya and many other places who are helping us to bring Digital Story Time to life.
